DO DUC MINH’s Story

Fortunate to be born into a family that wasn’t overly challenging, accompanied and strongly encouraged by my elder brother, I embarked on a journey in pursuit of knowledge and was admitted to the specialized program at the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences. Together with my brother, our names were frequently mentioned on the school’s honor roll with first and second prizes in the National Physics Competition for many years. My journey at the age of 17 consisted of extended days of studying alongside outstanding friends. We all relentlessly strived in a rigorous academic environment. I appreciate the dedicated months of studying, the restless nights with only a few hours of sleep before school, and the summer breaks that felt like an extension of the school’s laboratory at the Hanoi Institute of Science and Technology. All of this served as motivation to surpass my limitations, earning numerous gold medals in international and national physics competitions. This has further defined my passion for STEM and my aspiration to explore outer space.

Hanoi, with its rich historical heritage, always provides me with a sense of connection, blending tradition with progress in daily life. Every step through the ancient streets on starlit autumn evenings, every science book I’ve read since childhood, and the achievements of scientists worldwide have nurtured my dreams of uncovering the mysteries of the universe and contributing to the advancement of space technology. Occasionally, while sitting in a corner of the schoolyard, discussing NASA’s space research and exploring enigmatic rocky planets beyond the Solar System, I journey into my imagination, pondering intriguing questions about the existence of life beyond Earth. To me, the inventions of scientists in deciphering the secrets of distant planetary systems are like a world of timeless tales that have stayed with me for many years in every dream.

Journey of Thought: From Play to Physics Competition

The rare moments of childhood spent playing video games on weekends opened up a new perspective on logical thinking and analytical skills for me, fueling my passion for NANO and physics. Those early-age games unexpectedly became valuable tools. I don’t advocate gaming as a path to excellence, but the games of my youth helped me apply myself to solving complex physics problems, even leading me to international physics competitions with outstanding achievements: a Gold medal at IYBC 2023 Entrepreneurship Economics, a Gold medal at ICPC 2023, First prize at the ASMOPSS 2022 team competition, a Gold medal at WICO 2022, a Silver medal at KiYO 2022, a Gold medal at AI_JAM 2022, a Gold medal at WIIPA 2022, an Encouragement award at Unlimited Physics 2022, a paper published in IYRC 2023, attendance at the IYRC 2023 summer camp, a Silver medal at IAPhO 2023, and a Silver medal at INSPO 2023.

As an inspired student of puzzle-solving games, I discovered a creative fusion between applied physics and electronic gaming, combined with virtual reality technology that has brought about fascinating simulated experiences and physical interactions in virtual space.

Nano Technology Research Experiments – A Creative Dream

From the lectures of our teachers on nano-technology research, I became curious about the vast universe. Nano experiments also awakened the scientific curiosity within me and sparked wondrous dreams. The desire to explore space led me to discover stars on a distant planet that could only be found in science research books and videos. I yearned to step foot in top American universities, where I could expand my knowledge through advanced research projects, go beyond the limits of the school laboratory, participate in space research projects, and have the opportunity to interview at NASA – the leading aerospace and space organization in the United States. For me, dreams are not just dreams when I am ready to face challenges and study harder to bring my dreams closer to reality.

Engaging with and forging connections with exceptional peers from diverse countries, I have matured within a scientific milieu. Proudly raising my country’s flag when receiving medals at international physics competitions I participated in was both a source of pride and a desire to explore the limitless space of research and application of Physics. I didn’t just share knowledge with international friends who shared my passion for Physics; there were also enduring friendships based on the exchange of knowledge. The journey at the age of 17 will not only be a personal success story but also an inspiration I want to pass on to future generations, encouraging them to pursue their passion and explore STEM and the fascinating world of space science. Combining passion and dedication, I want to challenge myself further, leaving a mark in both the field of physics and the scientific development of Vietnam in the future.”

Exploring Space Through the Pen of Literature

The colors of science have deeply permeated my literary soul for many years during my adolescence. This is how I describe my dream of becoming an aerospace engineer. Perhaps that’s why I not only achieved an average score of 9.9, ranking in the top 1% in Physics at school but also excelled in Literature with the highest average score in the class. I have been a member of the ‘SPOFY Club’ for quite some time, taking on the role of writing articles on scientific, space, and astronomy topics, with the hope of passing on my dreams of conquering space to the generations after me. My scientific writings are not just about seeking information; they also hold the flame of my STEM passion, my passion for space science, which has burned for over a decade. I aim to pass on this flame from a 17-year-old student to the entire universe – a place that has become a part of my life, as natural as how I greet friends with my sincere smile.

The Vision for the Future and Dreams of a U.S. Scholarship

“Science knows no boundaries and is not bound by gravity. It leads us to places that once only dreamed.” – I will bring these words of Edwin Hubble to an American university – where “space exploration is a mission not only of one nation but of all people.”

I hope that at the age of 18, after completing the 12th grade, I will pursue my passion for a career as an aerospace engineer, researching and developing new technologies to enhance access to and exploration of space. This includes the development of spacecraft, navigation and guidance systems, space interaction technologies, and many other technologies. If asked about my biggest challenge, it undoubtedly comes from balancing academics and time for family and friends. I always face this challenge and seek balance, taking every opportunity to take care of myself and share joy with loved ones.

The aspiration to study at top universities in the United States, continue the journey of space exploration, participate in international programs, and meet the great scientists who have left their mark on my childhood memories, I do not hesitate to face challenges, ready to rise, representing a generation full of dreams and enthusiasm. I dream that one day not far away, I will be involved in breakthrough projects and research, heading towards distant planets, exploring the mysteries of the universe, and contributing my efforts to benefit humanity.

The traditional attire of the Dao Thanh Phán people in Bình Liêu district, Quảng Ninh province, always invokes a deep sense of admiration within me. With a history dating back to the 15th century, they have manifested the uniqueness and vibrancy of their cultural identity in every aspect of their clothing. Residing in highland regions, they believe that vibrant attire keeps wild creatures at bay, which is why they favor bright colors and intricate patterns.

Dao Thanh Phan women wear a striking red headdress and adorn their heads with intricately patterned scarves, secured under their chins. This creates a charming and distinctive image. Moreover, married women follow special customs such as shaving their heads, grooming their eyebrows, and covering their teeth with gold, reflecting their traditional elegance and poise.

In addition, the patterns on their clothing, whether on their tops, pants, or headscarves, depict their surroundings, from bean flower and ginseng motifs to terraced rice fields and plowing tools. Their earth-built houses further underscore a profound connection with nature. Embroidery is an integral part of Dao Thanh Phán women’s daily life, and I am continually amazed by their dexterity and skill in this art form. All of these elements showcase a special synergy between the people and the land they hold dear.”
